120 BODYWORK

120 Series Window Scraper Rubber/Seal Replacement

Dear Kevin

I was horrified the other day to find one of the rear doors of my 120 Estate full of water. On investigation I found that the drain holes at the bottom of the doors were blocked with Waxoil, but where was the water coming from?

On investigation I found that the scraper rubber at the top of the door had several splits. My first thought was a replacement would be difficult to find but that was not the case. A call to Terry at Cumbers Garage, Brixham, a cheque in the post and they were soon on their way (I decided in view of cost to replace all four).
Replacing the Rubber:
Removing the old rubbers was not a problem. I first lowered the window to its lowest point and then with a pair of pliers pulled the rubber out of its mounting grove. Replacing was somewhat more of a problem.
Scraper rubbers on 120’s unlike most cars, Have no metal reinforcement, they clip into a Metal rail at the rear of the chrome strip at the Top of the door.
In order to make fitment easier, I first ran Some washing-up liquid into the metal moulding Rail and also smeared to bottom edge of the rubber Starting at one end with a screwdriver in the slot slightly widen the gap and slide in the end of new rubber. Once started the new rubber can be pulled along slot a bit at a time, pushing down on the rubber as it goes into its holder until it fills the whole length of the window. I cut my replacement rubbers a little longer Than the originals and then trimmed them once they were fitted. That then gave an exact fit.
Since replacing the seals there has been no Further water in the doors but it is worth checking The drain holes to see if they are clear.
Thanks for all your help in the past with Technical advice etc. Hope to see you at the National Gathering. Bob Burchill
