This years Autumn Gathering was held at the Cars of the Stars Motor Museum, Keswick in the beautiful Lake District.
Members on arrival were escorted to ‘Grandy Nook’ Coffee Shop/Tea Room for our usual Members welcome of refreshments. Refreshed with tea etc after their journeys Members made there way to the Museum which houses a large collection of vehicles used in films, TV etc.
The Club had booked a tour of the Museum and we were very pleased to have a Phil Nelson as our guide.
It proved a most interesting tour with points of interest on most of the vehicles and showing us items that usual visitors would not be able to see. He told us that the museum houses at present 2 Batmobiles, the most modern of which was used by Val Kilmer. He told us of how when the car was delivered it had to be driven the short distance, about 100 yards from the Public Car Park. A Gallon of Petrol was put into the 12 Lt ‘Beast’ and was started but on the way up to the museum it ran out of petrol. The car having to be pushed the final distance into the museum.
We were shown a VW Beetle ‘Herbie’ which had controls in the rear so the car could be driven without a driver appearing in the front.
We looked under the bonnet of Lady Penelope’s Pink Rolls Royce built by Gerry Anderson to promote his Thunderbirds film in the 60’s, which actually has a Bedford 6 wheel Coach Chassis and Bedford petrol truck engine. This we were informed is the only non Rolls Royce vehicle that the company has allowed to carry the famous RR Grille and Silver Lady.
Having looked at the other interesting exhibits, which unfortunately did not include The Saint Car 77 GYL which along with many other cars is in store, we left the Museum for a drive through the beautiful Lakeland scenery to Kirkstone for lunch at the 15C Kirkstone Pass Inn - the highest Public House in England at 1481 ft above sea level.
Here Members enjoyed a variety of excellent food, well worth a visit if you are in the area.
It was soon time for Members to leave and make their way home but not before the presentation of awards, which were as follows:
Best Car: Gill & Geoff Naylor 1966 1800S
R/U Best Car Pre 1970 : Karl Eric Malberg 1969 1800S
R/U Best Car Pre 2000 : Colin Hughes 1990 760 Limousine
Furthest Distance Travelled: Colin & Robert Hughes.
My thanks to all those Members who came along and supported the day, See you all next year at Holker Hall on Sunday 4th October, 2008
