Volvo 1800S Estate ‘Prototype’ 1967 – PJW 789F – A Unique Volvo!

This Volvo 1800S Estate is believed to be a pre production ‘Prototype’ built in 1967 some 4 years before Volvo produced the 1800ES – the ‘estate’ model of the famous 1800 sports.

Vehicle was recovered earlier this year from a field to Wiltshire where it had been stored for a number of years. No history of this vehicle has been found as to the manufacturer but it has been suggested by some, due to its construction that it may have been converted as a prototype by ‘Abotts of Farnham’ Surrey Coach Builders who converted Ford Zephyr and Zodiac Saloons into estates in the 1960’s. I have never come across another example like this in all my years around the 1800.

Externally the conversion was excellent but inside it is a mix of all sorts, which leads me to the conclusion that the bodywork was undertaken professionally as a design exercise and on completion was sold off. The interior of the project being fitted/sourced by a subsequent owner of the vehicle. The 1800S Estate in ‘as found’ was recently the centre-piece of the Volvo Enthusiasts Club Stand at the Practical Classics restoration Show held at the NEC Birmingham and was, through social media and PC’s Website used to advertise the event. This caused much interest on the Club Stand with visitors already aware of the vehicle, wanting to see this rare car in the flesh. It was hoped with all the media interest in the car, that further information on the cars manufacturer would come to light but so far we still have no idea who converted the car and for what purpose

Due to other restoration commitments I have reluctantly decided to let the car go to someone who will restore it to its former glory and preserve a piece of Volvo history. The car therefore is now ‘For Sale’

Further info: The engine is totally stripped into parts, without a block, which I am told was damaged beyond use and gearbox/overdrive has also been dismantled for restoration. Some parts that were previously removed and already been restored and come with the car.
