Volvo Enthusiasts Club – Northern Day Out, 2015

                                                                                                                                      What a great day out!

Over 25 Volvo’s and other Members Cars  assembled at Rheged near Penrith, just off Junction 40 of the M6 in Cumbria, for this year’s Northern Day Out, an annual event which this year took place on Sunday 11^th October.

                Once again we were joined by our friends from the Volvo Tuning Club for this event plus other Volvo owners, who we hope will join the club soon.

                Due to there being an Antiques Fayre also being held at Rheged, we had been asked to use the lower car park, which soon filled up with Volvo’s of all models.

                At about 12.30 a convoy of Volvo’s headed towards the A6, the old road North from England to Scotland before the M6 was built.

                Kevin had done his homework and had, the previous Monday when up checking the route etc found our first point of call, the Jersey Ice Cream Farm, where Members took refreshment of Tea/Coffee or the wonderful ice cream or all flavours, compliments of the Club. Absolutely excellent!

                Outside Stu Mills, our VEC Tuning and FWD Technical Co-ordinator and Volvotuning.net Events Co-ordinator was busy getting cars into position in the Car Park for a Club Photo Shoot – Stu, you missed your vocation; you should have worked for NCP!

                Following refreshments and photo’s, the convoy moved on to the top of Shap Fell, notorious prior to the building of the M6 for vehicles being stranded during the bad winters. Pulling into a large lay-bye to accommodate all the cars before the decent of Shap, Stu and Kevin went off to find a vantage point to film the convoy going past.                 Another quick regroup in a lay-bye just outside Windermere and the party split into two groups to drive up to the Kirkstone Inn and the Pass. One group took the ‘Struggle’ route, a 1in 4 narrow road, that really tests your motor and driver! The other group taking the usual tourist route over the pass, still quite a climb.

               Both groups of Volvo’s and other members cars finally meeting up in the Car Park of the Kirkstone Inn – the highest inn in Cumbria for a well earned late lunch and more time for Members to chat Volvo and get to know each other.

                It was soon time for everyone to leave and make their way home.

Volvo Enthusiasts Club win ‘Best Club Stand’

In previous years the Volvo Enthusiasts Club has supported this event by taking a space in the autojumble to promote membership of the club and its activities.

            This year we were asked by the organisers if we would like to take a Club Stand following the theme of Rock & Roll Years with cars from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and in our case the 80’s and to accompany the cars there would be live music

            Our display featured 3 Volvo,s, Kevin, our Founders very rare, with only 6 serving worldwide according to Volvo Sweden, PV445 Convertible, Chris Tye’s very nice Jensen built P1800 and Colin Hughes, our Principle Club Contact’s Volvo 760 Lowrider Estate.

            Forming the backdrop of the display was an American Drive-in painted by Kevin some years ago while teaching in Cornwall and was taken he told us from the opening sequence of the Rock & Roll film American Graffiti. Standing back from the Stand it was very realistic with the cars parked in front.

            In addition to the Live Music, Colin entertained the visitor to the stand with his Lowrider, performing a variety of movements to the onboard music. The car really is a credit to Colin and always draws a crowd.

          This really was an excellent Show, with lots of visitors and interest in the Club. Thanks to those members who helped man the stand and a special thanks to Barrie Sutcliffe who came all the way from Huddersfield to help.

          Our hard work was in the end rewarded by the organisers, who awarded us Best Club Stand. Many thanks to them. Our next visit to shepton Mallet will be for the Bristol Classic Car Show, the venues major event. So why not come along and support us. Volvo Enthusiasts Club Wins Best Club Stand at this years Bristol Classic Car Show with their stand 'Alice in Volvoland'.

This was a return winning trip for the Club, having won Best Stand at the earlier 'Rock & Roll' Classic held in February.

Volvo Cars on display were Chris Tye's 1962 Jensen built P1800, Kevin Price's 1952 PV445 Convertible, Gillian & Tony Whitton's 1963 120 Estate and Kevin Price's 1962 'original' Roger Moore TV 'ST 1' Saint Car - P1800.

Also manning the stand were Colin & May Tatlow from Cornwall  who joined the team as the 'Mad Hatter' and 'Queen of Hearts'.

Another great success for the Volvo Enthusiasts Club - Thanks to all those who helped make it possible and came along to visit us at the show.

STOLEN Volvo 240  Estate (Torslanda) K441KYD from Taunton area

Dear Members

Sorry for this pitch out of the blue. My mother has just had her Volvo 240
Estate (Torslanda) stolen from her house, near Taunton, Somerset. She was
widowed three weeks ago, and we think the burglars saw the death notice in the
paper and decided to strike. She lives on her own in the middle of nowhere, no
neighbours in sight, so this is quite traumatic for her.

This isn't just a sob story! I'm just writing to ask kindly if you would keep an
eye out for anyone trying to offload a silver Torslanda, registration, K441KYD.
I'd be really grateful. The police captured it on camera being driven away
towards Taunton, but we have no information beyond that.

I'm keeping my eye on second hand dealers in case something pops up. If you've
any advice about what a thief might do with a Torslanda, I'd be grateful to hear
it! If you can circulate this notice to members of the Volvo Enthusiasts Club,
even, that would be fantastic. I've just managed to get a chassis number from my mother: it was 942425. Engine number 001004 if that's of any use, too.
Seats were blue cloth. Slight damage on some sort of electrical box on the back, near tow-bar.
Much obliged to everyone - I'd love to catch the lowlife who did this, though don't hold out much hope. It would make one little old lady feel a bit safer if anything did come of it, though.

Volvo Enthusiasts Club at the Bristol Restoration Show 2014

 What a great Show!

 What a great show this year's Bristol Restoration turned out to be, with record making attendances and excellent Club Stands, Trade Exhibitors and Autojumble.

 The Volvo Enthusiasts Club once again took at stand at this end of season 'Bristol' event, with a themed display of 'It's at Volvo Stick-up (Pick-up)' complete with painted backdrop and featuring the unique 1986 Volvo      740 (Metherell) Pick-up, built by the late owner of Trelavour Road Garage, St Dennis, Cornwall in 1993, a recent acquisition to Kevin, our Club Founder Volvo 'Classic fleet', who had saved the vehicle from the Scrap Yard.

Joining the 740 Pick-up were Chris Tye's beautiful Dark Grey Metallic 1962 Jensen built Volvo P1800 and Kevin's, now famous TV Saint Car 71 DXC aka ST 1, which as awarded 'R/U Most interesting Vehicle'. 'Roger' was   even joined for a brief time by ex Beatle 'Paul', who had spent the weekend helping on the Ford Classic Capri Club stand

There was lots of interest in the Club display and in particular the unique Volvo 740 Pick-up, with much discussion over the problems Kevin is having getting the vehicle registered by DVLA. Because of an oversight of the previous owner to change the vehicle from it's original specification of a 740 GLE Estate to a Pick-up in 1993, it has now  had the vehicle's original Registration of D600 ODV pronounced 'VOID', thus it cannot be used on the road and will be allocated a 'Q' Reg following a VOSA inspection etc - What a great shame  that bureaucracy has once again overtaken the interests of history and the DVLA and EU policy will help loose more of our 'classic vehicle' heritage!

Many thanks once again to Jim and Sean Skeet who made the whole Club stand possible, transporting the Pick-up and all the Club display materials down to Shepton Mallet - Many thanks, Jim & Sean, it was once again, much appreciated.

VEC up North

Was an absolutely beautiful day, weather perfect, although up as far a Blackpool turning off M6 was lots of fog.

Well to start at Rheged, had 3 cars turn up Graeme and wife from Lockerbie with 121, Dave ? and wife with red 144S and me with ST 1. We were then joined my a lovely red 245GL from Co Durham who joined the club there. He and his wife had limited time so only the 3 of us travelled down past Ulleswater to Kirksone Pass and Kirkstone In for lunch.

A lovely meal, and good chat and time to go.

Others had left when 2 more Volvo's arrived another 120 and an 1800. They had missed us at Rheged and thought we would be gone from Kirkstone Inn so were just passing.

Took them all into Inn and had an Hot Chocolate with them. They were members but don't remember their names but they enjoyed the day and were sorry they were late getting to Rheged and missed us.

So in the end we had 6 cars. Not the best turn out but considering it was listed in last magazine 3 months ago and not on Club Homepage (forgot to remind Trevor) plus it's end of season, it was ok.

One thiing is certain, everyone missed a beautiful, perfect Autumn day in the lakes.

A Weekend in Manchester with Royalty!

The Footman James Manchester Classic Car Show was once again held at Event City opposite the Trafford Centre in Manchester. An excellent venue for the show and also for other halves etc, not keen on cars, to have time shopping in the extensive Trafford Centre.

Centrepiece of our display this year was Kevin’s ex King Gustaf VI of Sweden’s Royal Car, a 1953 Volvo PV831 Limousine, which had only a week previously been recovered by Sean Skeet from 7 years storage by Matt and Dave Stadden (our Membership Secretary) following an engine failure on route for a wedding engagement.

Also on display was a very nice Volvo 131 owned by Members Graeme and Lesley Muir from Scotland, who not only show the car but use it to for Rallying!

This was joined by Dave and Heather Wilson’s beautiful red 144S of 1969 vintage, which is a credit to Dave’s hard work after restoring it from scrap condition.

Robert Hughes once again brought along his 245DL which is used daily and was displayed complete with Itera (Volvo designed) Recycled Plastic Bikes on a rear rack.

Colin Hughes our Principle Club Contact, brought along his recently acquired unique Volvo 760 Hearse. This was built from a standard Volvo 760 Estate when the previous owner a Funeral Directors could not obtain a new Hearse, so the owner had his everyday 760 converted – a very nice vehicle, that was advertised on Ebay for ‘Banger Racing’ would you believe!

This year sees the 30th Birthday of the 480ES, which was Volvo’s first FWD car. Our representative of the model was a 1993 480ES owned by Alan and Pat Orgill, which earlier this year had won ‘Best Car’ at Founders Day, our Club’s National Gathering.

Roger Parish once again brought along his 1970 1800E, which must be one of the very best examples of an 1800.

Two of our youngest Members, Natashia and Courtney Skeet brought along their very rare 340DL Automatic. This is their first Volvo, which they are restoring to bring to Club meets,

Finally on our display was an OV4 ‘Jakob’ Pedal Car and Teddy, owned by Treena and Kerris Price.

The show was very busy on both days and the new ‘Front of House Desk’ was very well received by visitors requesting information on the Club etc and we enrolled 6 new Members which was a great bonus.
The addition of a ‘Seating Area’   on the stand worked well and allowed visitors to take a break and chat to members of the Club Display Team in comfort.
The Manchester Classic is a great Show for those who have never ventured north, its well worth a visit.

Thanks to all those who helped build, man and breakdown the stand, to those who brought along their cars for display and all the members, old and new, plus other visitors who came along to see us.

Special thanks to Andy Rouse (Show Organiser) and his team for once again organising a great show – see you all again next year, we hope.

Volvo 480S For Sale

1995 Volvo 480S, one owner,133,000 miles, always garaged, no rust full service history.
Re the dashboard , although in the photo the steering wheel is obscuring the 3rd dial on the right , it is a standard 4 series fuel and temperature gauge rather than the information unit.
 
This is the version that had the normal dash from the 440, although not as sought after as the Celebration model, a lot rarer.  

One owner and garaged from new , lots of history, not all main dealer, 133000 miles . Its in very good condition but not concours , with a little work it could.
 
it's a 2.0 litre , funny spec doesn't have alloy wheels or sunroof , does have AC which works. 5Sp manual box. It drives very well and no horrible noises.
 
There is no rust anywhere and the paint has a good shine , interior also is nigh on perfect. The nicest thing about this car is that it is completely standard and unmodified, even the stereo is the original Volvo branded.

The Volvo Enthusiasts Club wins again at Bristol Show!

What a great weekend!

The Volvo Enthusiasts Club Display Team was once again in action over the weekend of the 13^th/14^th February at the Great Western Classic Car Show and Autojumble at Shepton Mallet.

           Five cars were displayed on a Rock & Roll ‘Grease’ themed stand, complete with a 1950’s American Diner backdrop which was painted and signs produced by the Club’s Founder – Kevin.

           On display was Kevin’s extremely rare 1952 Volvo PV445 Convertible, which won RU ‘Most interesting Vehicle’ in the show and has over the past year
been undergoing a cosmetic restoration and is nearing a return to the road for the 2016 season.

         This was joined by Terry and Lisa Court’s ‘Grease Lightening’ 1800S, complete with flames, plus Treena & Kerris Price’s Volvo OV4 Pedal Car and driver Teddy!

          Peter and Nicki Yapp brought along their lovely original 120 Estate which was exhibited some 20 years ago at the NEC on a Club display when owned by Max Davies,
it was great to see it back on a club stand after so many    years. This was complimented by our guest car, owned by Club Member and regular exhibitor on our stands,
Chris Tye’s 1962 Borgward Isabella Estate. This proved to be a great choice of car with visitors evaluating the similarities of the 2 Estate designs –
so did Volvo use the Borgward as the starting point as the basis of their design for the Amazon Estate – very interesting proposal
as the Borgward was in production in 1955 and the Amazon Estate not until 1962?

          Helping build and man the stand were also Club Display Team Members Jim, Sean and Debbie Skeet and new to the Team Jean Maurin, who is currently restoring a 1965 PV544 Sport he bought new and Raced/Rallied in 1960’s. He is keen to get things going in the Bristol area with a regular meet so if you live in the South-West or around Bristol he would be pleased to hear from you – any enquiries at this stage to Kevin.

              Reward for all the hard work over the weekend came in the way of the Club Display being awarded R/U Best Stand in the show.

           A great weekend was had by all, although bitterly cold outside the show. Thanks to all those Members old and new who braved the weather to come along and show their support of the club.

           See you all again on the weekend of the 17^th & 18^th June for our main show/display at Shepton Mallet, the Bristol Classic Car Show.

Volvo Enthusiasts Club & Volvo Tuning.Net Members Visit to the Volvo Car UK Technical Training Centre, Daventry – 20^th February, 2016.

Many thanks to David Baddeley, Colin Martin, Phil Chatterton and all members of Staff at the Volvo Technical Development Centre at Daventry, who gave up their Saturday, to welcome members of both clubs and show them around the UK Volvo Training facility at Daventry, Warwickshire. The Facility is due to be redeveloped in the very near future and it is hoped that we can return once the new building is completed.  A great meeting which saw Volvo’s past present and future coming together – thanks for Stu and Kevin for making it all possible.

Manchester Classic Car Show 2017 at Event City

Our display at this year’s Manchester Classic Car Show held over the weekend of the 16^th & 17^th September, 2017 was without doubt our very best display at this show so far, thanks to the support of Volvo Truck UK who kindly brought along two of their trucks to help us celebrate the 90^th Birthday of Volvo and ‘Jakob’ the first car produced in April 1927 and also the 50^th Birthday of Volvo Trucks in the UK.

             The centre-piece of our Club display were the new limited edition Ailsa FH16 truck, being Number1 of only 50 trucks to be produced. This was accompanied by Volvo’s F86 Tractor Unit from 1967, which was the very first Volvo truck to be imported into the UK by Scottish entrepreneurs Jim McKelvie and Jim Keyden who set up ‘Ailsa’ the UK Volvo Truck Importers in 1967 – hence the name given to the Limited Edition FH16 produced to celebrate 50 years.

            Joining the Volvo Trucks in a special memorial section of the stand was Kevin, our Club Founder’s 1962 P1800, which along with various props etc celebrated the work of the late Sir Roger Moore, who did earlier this year, portrayal of The Saint alias Simon Templar. Kevin’s car was used in the very first episode of the TV Series in 1962.

            Other Members cars helping to celebrate Volvo’s Birthday were Sean Skeet’s recently purchased lovely original Volvo 245DL which was previously owned by Royal Navy Commander who purchased the car new from Volvo London Export and Diplomatic Sales in Mayfair, London in August 1985. As the owner was stationed at S.H.A.P.E. (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) in Mons, Belgium, the car was officially exported to Belgium in mid August 1985. The car was then re-imported following his return to England.

            Volvo 940 owned by Cath and Steve Cropper. This was one of Volvo’s last RWD and ‘Red Block’ engine cars – often referred to as the last of the ‘Real Volvo’s’.

           Matt Stadden, our Chairman and Hereditary Founder recently purchased very rare 1983 Volvo 360GLT, which has only covered 10,000 miles from new. This must be a unique example.

           Alan & Pat Orgill brought along 2 of their cars, a 2006 C70 Convertible and1993 Volvo 480ES which recently took the couple to Sweden for the 90^th Birthday celebrations at VROM, which is an annual event centred around the Volvo Museum and Factory. At the meet Alan and Pat’s 480 won ‘Best 480’ attending, the trophy and various other items collected being displayed in the cars luggage area.

            Final vehicle on display was Treena and Kerris Price’s Pedal Car and Teddy, a model of Volvo’s first car ‘Jakob’, a 1927 OV4.

            On the Saturday afternoon of the show, a Birthday celebration took place for visitors etc, with Birthday Cake, nibbles etc which was very much enjoyed by those who attended.

           Many thanks to all those who helped and made it possible, particularly Volvo Truck UK for their support, Andy Rouse and team for once again organising a great show and finally all the many visitors and Members, old and new who came along to show their support for us the ‘original & official’ Volvo Enthusiasts Club founded in 1989

'Our Best Stand in a Decade'

Our Best Stand in a Decade - The Volvo Enthusiasts Club Founded in 1989 end a year of celebrations for the 90th Birthday of Volvo with a spectacular display depicting 'The Volvo Family'. Supported by Volvo Truck UK who kindly brought along their 1967 Volvo F86 the first Volvo truck to imported into the UK, which they purchased some years ago and fully restored. They also brought along a ED250 Mini Digger to represent Volvo Construction in our Volvo family. Volvo Cars were represented by the 'original' 1962 Volvo P1800 used by the late Sir Roger Moore in TV's The Saint owned by Club Founder Kevin Price. The car was actually built at Jensen Motors in West Bromwich and represented the England Volvo Build - with 1800 Bodyshell built in Scotland by Pressed Steel until 1969. The Volvo's Built in the Dutch Plant was represented by a Volvo 1983 360GLT with only 10,000 miles on the clock - owned by our Chairman and Hereditary Founder Matt Stadden. The Belgium Plant at Gent was represented by Alan and Pat Orgill's Volvo C30. Finally Volvo's home, Sweden was represented by Andy Marshall's very original 1954 PV444. Many thanks to Terry Court, Dave Stadden, Cath & Steve Cropper, Sean & Jim Skeet and Chris Tye for all their help with building and manning the Club Stand, plus huge thanks for the help and support of Volvo Truck UK, who this year also celebrated 50 years of Trucks in the UK. Volvo Enthusiasts Club at the Practical Classics Car & Restoration Show 2018

It is with great pleasure that we once again take a stand at this years Practical Classics Car & Restoration Show, having attended as a Club ALL the previous shows since is conception.

This year’s show will start our year of celebrations to commemorate the 90^th Birthday of Volvo Trucks founded in 1928.

Our Club Display will feature what is believed to be the oldest Volvo Truck in the UK which was recovered from a Cornish hedge in 2015. It has since then been in store awaiting restoration.

During the show Members of the Club Display Team will dismantle the 1953 Volvo PV834 Light Truck in preparation for a total rebuild, which will commence as soon as the show finishes.

Also on our display will be a collection of Volvo Cars which have undergone a restoration by Members or are in ‘as original’ condition. This will include the ‘original’ TV Saint car, a 1962 P1800 which was driven by the late Sir Roger Moore in the TV Series ‘The Saint’. Owned and restored by our Club Founder Kevin Price, this vehicle was winner of Practical Classic ‘Restorer of the Year’ and the ‘Golden Spanner’ in 2014.

Other cars on display will include Matt Stadden, our Club Chairman & Hereditary Founder’s 144DL which was featured in Practical Classics 140/240 Buyers Guide in 2017 plus Alan & Pat Origills award winning Volvo 480ES and Andy Marshall’s recent acquisition from Sweden, a PV544.

2018 Ludlow Festival & Marches Transport Show

Once again the 'original' Volvo Enthusiasts Club took a display space at the Ludlow Spring Festival and Marches Transport Festival, where over 200 vintage and classic and classic cars parked in and around Ludlow Castle.

               Our Stand this year was organised by Club Co-ordinator Paul Knight, who brought along his Citroen 'H' Van and his lovely 1963 Volvo P1800S which he uses as everyday transport.

               Joining Paul was Kevin's, our Club Founder, with his 'original' TV Saint Car, as used by the late Sir Roger Moore in the TV Series ‘The Saint’. Kevin also brought along with the help of Jim and Sean Skeet -
fellow Club Co-ordinator, his Volvo C70 Convertible and Volvo 245DL.

               The theme of the display was 'Volvo by the Sea' and included a full sized Punch & Judy, beach scene and Paul's 'H' Van converted to an Ice cream van.

Dorset Three Counties Rally on Sunday 6th May

Thanks to the great efforts of our Southern Regional Representative Ove Ericsson, Members of the Volvo Enthusiasts Club enjoyed a great Day Out touring the wonderful villages and country roads of the Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire borders.

             The event, held annually on the May Bank Holiday Sunday, is now in its third year and continues to grow in popularity with this year being our best turn-out so far, comprising of 12 Volvo’s including Jensen Built P1800’s, 2lt 1800’s, a cowhorn 1800S, a very rare 144 Grande Luxe, a C70 Convertible, a 360GLTand an 850T5 Estate.

            Starting point for the tour was The Benett Arms at Semley, near Shaftsbury where Members were treated to freshly baked homemade scones, jam and cream plus lots of tea and coffee, all courtesy of the Club.

            Kevin with ST 1 aka 71 DXC, the original TV Saint car was on his arrival quickly asked to work his magic on a Member’s 1800 whose boot would not open due to the lock coming apart inside the car. Kevin with the aid of various tools from boxes in the assembled car soon had the boot open and the members were then able to retrieve their needed items from the boot. With the Boot handle removed by Kevin for the rest of the tour the owner and wife were able to join us – perhaps we should rename Kevin – Merlin!

            After enjoying the lovely refreshments, Ove introduced the event and that this year there would also a treasure hunt, with things to find on route – the winners getting a prize at the finish.

            Setting off in small groups we spent the morning enjoying the country lanes and scenery before arriving at a lovely country pub for lunch. With the excellent weather, not a cloud in the sky, this was taken in the pubs garden, where members sat and discussed their various Volvo stories.

             The final leg of the tour took in the New Forest and ended at pub in the lovely  village of Romsey – a perfect end to a perfect day which all enjoyed.

             Many thanks again to Ove and Family for organising another great Dorset Rally and to all those who came along from as far afield as Kent, Northampton and the Midlands.

             See you all next year – Same time, same Bank Holiday Sunday for another Dorset Rally.

First Members Day Out of 2016

Volvo Enthusiasts Club – Flying Horses Meet - January, 2016

What a great day out!

Our first Members Day Out of 2016 was held as usual, as an informal meet, at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Oxhill, near Straftford upon Avon.

               Resident at the Sanctuary is ‘Dylon’, a pony the VEC has supprted for a number of years and is one of the reasons we meet here each year to pay for his adoption and see his and other residents progress.

               Joining the VEC Members were once again our friends from the Volvo Tuning Club and with their support we were able to offer an additional ‘Road Run’ and visit to the Midland Air Museum.

               Complimentary tea and coffee courtesy of the VEC drank and a look around the Redwings site, plus look at Dylon, it was off for the 15mile ish run over to Coventry Airport and the Midland Air Museum.

             Here Members were able, with special permision gained from the owners, to drive their cars into the Museum Outdoor Exhibition Area and park their cars along side the many aircraft exhibits – a great photo opportunity!

               Members again were once again able to partake of complimentary Tea and Coffee thanks the VT Club in the warmth of the Museum Cafe, while the brave endured the cold and took photographs in various locations. Stu – (Chief Parking Attendant) Mills, our FWD Volvo and Tuning Cordinator was as usual in his element organising cars in various positions for some great photo opportunites – Thanks once again Stu, you really have missed your vocaton with NCP!

               While photo’s were being taken other Members of both Clubs took to opportunity to look around the exhibits, including boarding the Flight Deck of an Avro Vulcan Bomber, how 5 crew managed to work in such a small space is pretty amazing – What a shame the last Airworthy Vulcan that we saw in flight last Summer at Throckmoreton Air Show has now been grounded. Keep an eye on Club events, we hope to visit the Vulcan at Wellesbourne seen in Guy Martin’s ‘Last Flight of the Vulcan’ program which can still fast taxi’s down the run way, for a visit and look on board in the near future.

              Many thanks to Kevin and Stu Mills for organising a great day out. Thanks also to all those who braved the cold and came along to support the event and to the staff and volunteers at the Redwings Horse Sanctuary and the Midland Air Museum for making our visits a great success. Well our biggest Show Event of the year has been and gone and it’s time to reflect on what was without doubt one of the very best NEC Classics.
             Our Stand this year featured a great selection of cars including the ex King Gustaf VI Royal car, a 1953 Volvo PV831 Limousine, which had been featured on the Shows Website and also in the Show Guide, owned by Kevin our Club Founder, and the Stand Organiser.
             This year is the 30th Birthday of Volvo’s first Front Wheel Drive Car, the Volvo 480ES and to celebrate this event our representative was Alan and Pat Orgill’s 1993 480ES, which had won Best Car the previous Summer at our Club’s Founder’s Day in June. Runner–up to the 480ES at Founders Day was also displayed on the stand, John Kemp’s lovely 131, which was featured on ‘Car SOS’ earlier this year when they restored an Amazon from Denmark.
               Two of the clubs youngest members, Natasha and Courtney Skeet brought along their ongoing restoration project, a 1990 340 Auto with CVT Transmission, which caused a lot of interest with younger visitors interested in RWD cars for the pastime of ‘Drifting’!
               Colin Hughes, our Principle contact brought along with Robert, his latest acquisition, which he had previously premiered at the Manchester Classic Car Show. Colin purchased the car following an Advert on Ebay – headlining the vehicle for sale as a ‘Banger Racer’. The vehicle in question is a one-off Hearse, built from a 740 Estate owned by the Funeral director, who could not at the time find a replacement for his Hearse, so he had his own daily driver converted!
              Joining the Club Display Team for his first show was Stu Mills, our recently appointed Volvo FWD and Tuning Co-ordinator. Millsy as he is known brought along his latest purchase a V70 Police Estate, complete with all kit, lights, horns etc; which caused great interest with visitors, some of whom actually drove the car when in Police Service with Cambridge Constabulary.
              New for this year was the Club Desk, which really did work well, allowing prospective new members and others to gain information easily from the permanently manned area.
              In addition to our display, Kevin’s famous, ‘original’ Roger Moore TV Saint Car, 71 DXC aka ‘ST 1’, which had been featured in current issue of Practical Classics Magazine was also on display at the show on the Practical Classics Stand and the original XJS from ‘Return of the Saint’ was also on a PC display in another part of the show.
              Fuzz Townsend and Car SOS also had an 1800S on display which they reunited with its owner on the Sunday of the show.
              Lancaster Insurance, sponsors of the show also had a white 1800 on their stand, making 3 white ones in total – like buses, you never see one and three come bye! This car was part of their ‘Miss World’ display, with cars from around the world representing counties, to be judged by visitors in order to find the ultimate Miss World. The 1800 was another Jensen built P1800 similar to Kevin’s Saint Car.
                All in all, it was a great show, which started for Kevin, Jim and Sean Skeet on the Wednesday of the show week, delivering 3 of the cars and all the materials of build the stand and ended on the Monday afternoon collecting cars and materials from the Hall.  Thanks to them and to John Kemp, Alan Orgill, Stu Mills plus Kevin, for building the stand on the Thursday and all the other Display Team Members, Colin Hughes, Robert Hughes, Debbie Skeet, Roger Parish, Pat Orgill and Natashia & Courtney Skeet who helped them man the stand for the three days of the show. Our thanks to all those Members old and new who came along and gave us their support and to Alison of Clarion Exhibitions for all her help and support – A great show - See you all again next year
            

PRACTICAL CLASSICS RESTORATION SHOW NEC 2015

The second Practical Classics Restoration Show at the NEC over the weekend of March 28^th and 29^th was every bit as exciting as the first!  The number of car clubs was said to have almost doubled and there were many more autojumblers than last year; there was also plenty for those not so keen on oily rags!

            The VEC stand was filled to the brim with fantastic cars, centre stage of which was Kevin Price’s 1967 1800 Estate car - believed to be a prototype for the later 1800ES - and which was displayed in “field-find” condition on the back of a trailer supposedly pulled by a 1974 Series III Land Rover (Jim and Sean Skeet).  Practical Classics had used pictures of the 1800 Estate in their magazine promotion for the show and on their Facebook page, so interest was high amongst visitors.

A 1972 1800ES (Gillian and Tony Whitton) was also on the stand to enable visitors to see how the “concept” had developed and its once red paintwork had been freshly repainted in black; a very tidy car that had required very little bodywork fettling prior to paint, the interior was in great original condition with only the headlining needing replacement.

                Roger Parish’s beautiful Gold 1971 1800E was, as always, immaculately presented and Roger has said it will soon be off to auction - sad to think we may not see it again.

  Colin Hughes provided his 240 Pick-up; one of his 480’s; two of his Itera bikes (built by Volvo from recycled plastic) and a very novel trike he had picked up just that week!

Kevin had also taken along his Saint Car - which was immediately purloined by the organisers to pad out the “Ask the Experts” stand – as well as his PV Convertible, which was to be stripped down during the course of the show prior to a repaint.     

                Special mention must go to “Eric” who provided us with a constant stream of hot beverages, “Walter” for keeping “Eric” topped up and especially to all those who gave up their time to come and help on the stand – John Kemp, Debbie, Natasha and Courtney Skeet and Robert Hughes -without whom the rest of us would have struggled, thank you all.

                As always there was great interest in our selection of cars and display team members were kept busy discussing the merits of each model, their values and spares availability amongst others.  Interest in Club membership was also high and lots of new members were signed up over the weekend - we all take great pleasure in extending our new brethren a warm welcome to the Club, we hope they will be pleased with what they find in these pages, but most especially with the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere we aim to foster within the Club and we also look forward to seeing them at forthcoming events.

Volvo Goes Racing – and its an Estate as well!!!                        Kevin Price
Historically when thinking of Volvo and Volvo Owners, thoughts would go straight away to old men’s ultra-safe boxy cars or large estates owned by antique dealers like TV's Lovejoy, with roof racks loaded with wardrobes, side boards etc;
 
20 years ago, yes its 20 years Volvo’s image changed forever when the company returned to Motorsport in the form of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and not with just any Volvo but an Estate!
 
The year 1994 saw Volvo with Drivers Rickard Rydell (who would in a later season Win the Championship in a Volvo S40) and Jan Lammers, embark on their first season with Team Volvo headed by the legend Tom Wilkinshaw and TWR Racing.
 
The Volvo Enthusiasts Club was pleased to exhibit, with the support of Andy Rouse, the Show Organiser, one of the 1994 BTCC 850 Racing Estates on their stand at the Manchester Classic Car Show to celebrate the 20th Birthday of Volvo’s return to Motorsport.
 
Joining the Racing 850 was an example of one of Volvo’s other motorsport successes the 120 Amazon. The exhibit being one of the cars used  in the London-Sydney Rallies in 1993 and 2000 and also the London – Mexico in 1995. The car has recently been restored and was shown in its 1995 London – Mexico Rally decals etc.

Also on display were a collection of other Classic Volvo's including an ultra rare, only 6 survive worldwide, 1952 Volvo PV445 Convertible, a beautifully restored gold 1800E, an immaculate 120 Estate and a daily used Volvo 480ES all complimenting the theme of 'Welcome to Volvo by the Sea' which included a Punch & Judy Puppet Theatre, Picnic with deckchairs etc. More photographs to follow and full show report very soon.

588XUW was imported from Sweden in 1985 by a Devon Volvo agency and was part of an extensive collection of Classic Volvos.The car was a showroom exhibit for 14 years,during this time it was driven just 1,000 miles and has now covered 58,882 miles from new.                                                                
In 2001 the car was upgraded to the American 08 standard by the addition of twin SU,s and a 4 speed gearbox,at the same time it was converted to unleaded petrol.

Bristol Classic Restoration Show 2013

This year’s Bristol Classic Vehicle Restoration Show was again held at the popular venue of the Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

The Volvo Enthusiasts Club, as in previous year’s, took a large stand in the Showering Hall, with 3 Volvo’s on display - 2 1800’s and a 740 Pick-up.

Pride of place was Kevin’s, our Founder, recently returned to the road, after 40 years, 1962 P1800 which was used by now Sir Roger Moore in the very first series of TV’s The Saint – ST 1 aka 71 DXC.

Keeping ST 1 company was Gavin’s, of Count Olaf Volvo Specialists - Wellington, Somerset Tel: 07796005177, ‘PUF’ a 1964 1800S which is undergoing the initial stages of a full restoration in his workshop at Foxmoor Industrial Estate, Wellington. Gavin, used to pass by this car on a drive in London on his way to school and never thought one day he would be lucky enough to be its owner. The car will require extensive work to the body which has suffered badly from rust and Gavin had removed, for the show, several sections from the outer panels to allow visitors to see the true extent of corrosion and what was required to rebuild the car. The car caused much interest with visitors who were keen to discuss the work required and methods to be used.

Also on the stand was Colin Hughes, the Club’s Principle Contact, very well converted Volvo 740 Pick-up which as covered a staggering 1 Million plus Miles. The 740 Estate was used as a Taxi before being converted into a pick-up by a motor cycle enthusiast to carry his bikes – Why didn’t Volvo do it, excellent!

Also manning the stand was Chris Tye, a fellow Jensen P1800 owner, who is currently restoring one of the very rare P1800S’s (only 2000 built) which were built by Volvo using almost all the same parts as the Jensen cars but in Sweden, before the new bodyshell of the 1964 1800S was produced with the later seats and interior.

Visiting the Show over the weekend were a number of Volvo’s which included a very rare 1972 1800E owned by Douglas Rice from the USA, who purchased the US Spec car new in 1972 while working temporarily in mainland Europe. After working in Europe Douglas moved to Britain where he still lives and so the car never actually got to the US. The car is very unusual, being one the very last coupe models produced, which was built alongside the 1800ES production. The car features many of the parts used on the Estate, including the interior and steel wheels. Kevin, who is recognised as the authority on the 1800 informed the owner that he knew of only 2 RHD Type ‘W’ 1800E’s in the UK and had only actually seen one in the flesh, coincidently the same light blue metallic (code 111) and black interior.

Throughout the show Members of the Club manning the stand were kept very busy answering Technical and Membership queries. A great show! If you would like to help in the future why not contact Kevin.

21-22 SEPTEMBER 2013

Four cars braved the trip to Manchester to inhabit the Volvo Enthusiasts Club stand for two days at the inaugural Footman James Manchester Classic Car Show - and we were rewarded with a great weekend.

Having all assumed that Manchester would be cold and wet(!) we were a little on the warm side to say the least and the umbrella could have proved its worth as a sunshade.

Event City was easy to find ‘though not quite the claimed 5 minute walk from the hotel, proving to be 30 mins on day 1, but this being pared to 20 mins thereafter by missing out the walk through the Trafford Centre!

After a prolonged photo shoot for The Saint Car on arrival that resulted in a Daily Mail slot the following Monday, all four club cars were driven into the building – a carpeted hall no less – and spaced out on a stand that Kevin would once (?) have loved to shoehorn 9 or 10 onto!  Placed close to the entranceway, we felt in a privileged position.

With only a minimal amount of stand building (there is very little you can fit into an 1800 and Colin’s LowRider is full of speakers and pumps); Kevin had travelled with “Roger Moore” prostrate in the front passenger seat and a box of club magazines in the boot, the convertible had the overspill from The Saint Car, Robert’s 240 was full of tea, crisps and the kettle and Colin brought the Club banners.

ST 1 (aka 71 DXC) had pride of place at the front of the stand, with Gillian and Tony Whitton’s 1800 convertible beside it, Robert Hughes’ powder blue 240 (all original) was next and then Colin Hughes LowRider - which was a considerable draw each time visitors heard the hydraulic pumps start up!

The Saint Car and the convertible had made a pretty picture on the M6, driving in “convoy” from Bewdley.  Having only done 30 miles since its MOT, 71 DXC performed flawlessly.  The convertible had been fitted with electronic ignition just a few days before the trip (123ignition) and it has transformed the performance, fluent in all ranges and a vast improvement in fuel economy.  No longer the snarling, spitting monster of old, now just a purring puss cat.

The organisers had placed The Saab Owners Club next to The VEC stand and we all had a great time throwing insults back and forth across the demarcation line.  We will be requesting neighbouring stands again next year!  A beautiful Saab estate in a glorious sunflower yellow was Car of the Show, well done that Saab.

 Many visitors to the VEC stand were there solely to see ST 1; all were impressed by what they saw - and by the back story of Kevin’s determination to find and put the car back on the road.  They were just as amazed that the car had been driven up having only passed the MOT a week before.

For a new show there was a reasonable flow of visitors, although perhaps numbers were affected by the Manchester Derby on the Saturday afternoon, but it bodes well for the future.

Sadly, there were a number of complete no-shows by some clubs and other clubs seemed to have large gaps on stands that were obviously intended for many more cars.  The VEC stand could have accommodated at least two more cars and there must be Club members in the area who have vehicles that visitors would love to see.  Often the complaint can be that “It’s always the same cars on the stand”, but you can only fill said stand with what is available.

BEAMISH MEETING-----October 5^th 2013  

This year we had warmer weather and the usual turn out of friends We did miss Geoff and Gillian Naylor in their P1800—The pic shows Five vehicles ---- the unusual one being the Volvo Pick up of Colin Hughes—and a general shot of the Beamish Village All in all Beamish was at its usual interesting best with some more attractions having been added  You can’t see it all in a Day---They are collecting 1950 household items-- this for other attractions  to be built in the village  It was good that the effort was made to meet up and this resulted in the usual banter and laughter we have come to expect at these dos. Colin and Robert took themselves off to another local car museum on the Sat evening --small but never the less nice to see yesteryears items being preserved --Gives me hope for my old age ---Planning next year already – as we have a new re-launch of the Magazine via Kevin Price and Gillian Witten ---we need to tell folk of what we are doing—so you all can put these events in your Diary.-- Those of you who read this please make some suggestions of when and where you would like to meet next year----Thanks Russ

THE SAINT GOES TO LINCOLN

-      Along with a PV and Amazon!

Immediately after the clearing of the Club stand at the NEC on 18^th November, I was once again in the privileged position of sitting behind the steering wheel of ST 1 (aka 71 DXC) – the ORIGINAL 1962 SAINT CAR.  This time I had the whole drive up to Lincoln to myself – how lucky am I! 

When Club Founder, Kevin Price, was asked to take The Saint Car and a couple of others to Stoneacre Volvo in Lincoln, he very generously asked me to drive the 1800 to and from the event, Kevin then drove his PV445 Convertible and my Husband Tony drove our 221 Amazon estate. 

The rather wet drive up was uneventful until Pixie (the Amazon) developed a fuel blockage just five miles from the dealership!  A new fuel filter and a blow through got the car to our destination.  The 1800 was, of course, faultless.

Stoneacre were celebrating the opening of their brand new showroom with an evening event that was attended by many Volvo UK Directors, as well as invited guests of their car buying clientele.  Canapes and wine were on offer and the evening ended with an impressive fireworks display. 

It is some years since I’ve attended a dealership launch of any sort and I found it a very different experience now.  Very few of the party goers showed any interest in the Classic Cars and had no idea of the 1800’s pedigree, even the dealership staff were baffled by older mechanicals!  It was hard having to bite my tongue when guests leant on car wings.  The Saint Car wasn’t immune from such treatment either, one couple taking drinks into the front seats!  I didn’t see that or I would have released my tongue and lashed with it. 

The return was interesting too, the convertible ran out of fuel and when pulling off the M69 motorway we discovered that there was no access back onto it!!  A hair raising trip through Nuneaton and other parts of the Midlands finally brought us out onto the M6 and then back to Bewdley. 

Convertible and Saint Car safely ensconced in their garaging Tony and I headed back to Suffolk, Pixie camping out in temporary accommodation for a couple of nights. 

Thank you Kevin for giving me the chance to drive your beautiful car again, it’s always such a pleasure.

Every member of the club display team have agreed that the event held this year has to be the most successful we have had for years.          

The superb cross section of cars we were able to drum up included a rare PV445 Convertible (Kevin Price), a PV210 Duett and 221 Amazon estate (Tony and Gillian Whitton), a 131 Amazon (Robert Whitton), a late model 244 (Robert Hughes), an 1800E (Colin and Pauline Atkinson) and an 1800ES (Ian Dunlop) – centre stage was the fabulous 1962 Jensen built 1800 used in the first series of “The Saint”  and owned by our illustrious Founder, Kevin Price!!!                 

 The cars were joined by a gloriously Green classic 2-berth 1973 Carlight Caribbean caravan (Gillian Whitton).  And two Volvo bikes – made from recycled plastic (Colin Hughes).    

Along the “back wall” were positioned the Light Blue Duett (a restoration project covered in years of soot and snail trails) and the Carlight Caribbean (also a major snail trailed restoration project) – the Carlight caravan provided a dumping ground for excess bits, but also drew in hoards of fans of classic caravans, along with those just fascinated by the colour (it’s know as The Jolly Green giant – and not just for the green algae growing on the roof!). The Turquoise 1800ES and the two Volvo bikes finished the rear line up.       

On the front left hand side of the stand the White PV convertible was being pulled along by a team of reindeer and adorned with Christmas parcels beautifully wrapped up by Molly Shaw, with lots of tinsel and a rather grim looking Father Christmas who we all blamed for the three little children leaning against the cars crying – or hiding?             

Next to the convertible sat the Saint Car with ‘Roger’ - which was causing quite a stir.  Many visitors to the stand had come purely to see this epic restoration project which had just been featured in Practical Classics.    

A monumental journey for Kevin Price from finding THE car in 1991, through years negotiating to buy it and then followed by the sixteen years of blood, sweat and tears that have culminated in a testament to Kevin’s determination to find  and preserve this iconic car for posterity.       

Next to the Saint Car sat the Light Blue 221 Amazon estate; body restored in 2012 and evoking fond memories to many of the shows visitors.

              In line next was the California White 131 Amazon; restoration almost finished, it had been hoped to MOT and drive the car up to the event but time ran out and, with just the brakes(!) left to do, it travelled on a transporter!           

The Mid Blue 244 was next and so many visitors could remember being driven in one as children. 

One young lady spending ages photographing every angle on the car revisiting her childhood in her Dad’s 240.

          On the front right hand side sat the Red 1800E; this is probably the best E in the country and as always it was immaculately presented.

      Thanks must go to John Kemp for giving up his weekend to come and help on the stand, his knowledge of the Amazon model (as well as others) was invaluable. Also thanks to ‘Eric’ or new tea urn who was kept very busy all weekend!         

From the opening of the show at 9.30 am on Friday to close of play at 5.30 pm on Sunday there was a constant stream of visitors anxious to talk about the cars on the stand and the caravan, to tell us about their own classic loves or to say that their Dad “had one of those”.  Many were on the lookout for spares for projects they were working on themselves, others looking for cars to buy – Robert Hughes reckoned he could have sold the entire stand (including the caravan) several times over!  

Our re-launched magazine was collected from the printers in time to be handed to prospective new members and we also had all of the available membership forms snapped up within the first two days.  Classic Volvos are certainly attracting a renewed enthusiasm and the Enthusiasts Club will undoubtedly benefit from the interest shown.

         Stand breakdown commenced immediately after the show and many of the cars left that night, with the remainder being cleared the following morning along with the Club carpet tiles and fencing.  Grateful thanks must go to Albe George who helped transport of Kevin’s Saint Car to the show plus the stand breakdown, with the loading of the van and then drove it back to Bewdley; a great help and a great helper – thank you Albe.              

It is hoped that we will have an even bigger stand next year when we will be celebrating our 25^th Anniversary and Kevin is aiming to have one car for each year of the Club’s existence.  He will be looking for cars that will reflect the variety that exists within the Club and if you would like your car to be featured on the stand – get in touch!  Entry passes are provided for cars, along with wristbands for drivers and one passenger.           

Members who have cars that are included on the stand must be prepared to spend most of the weekend with their car and to talk to visitors, answering questions about their car and their particular model.  Cars will also need to be left unlocked so that interiors can be viewed - but only entered with the owner’s consent.  Breaks are permitted to allow attendees a chance to see the show, eat – or go to the lavatory!

Volvo Enthusiasts Club Founder’s Day 2015 – Hartlebury Castle

A National Gathering for all Volvo Owners

Following the great success of last year’s inaugural Founder’s Day to celebrate the forthcoming 25^th Birthday of the Volvo Enthusiasts Club. This year’s event took place at Hartlebury Castle, near Kidderminster in Worcestershire thanks to Rob Greenwood,  Chairman of the Castle Preservation Trust, who recently with his team secured the purchase of the castle and saved it from developers.

             Rob is one of the founder members of the Volvo Enthusiasts Club and once owned an 1800ES which with Kevin in his Monster Miler P1800 ‘HAB’ undertook a tour of all four furthest compass points on mainland Britain and finally ending with a John O’Groats to Lands End Run to celebrate the 40^th Birthday of the 1800

             Weather for the day was perfect and despite the Club having been involved in a display at Throckmoreton Air Show the previous day, the turn-out was excellent, with all models represented, except for a PV, Kevin’s being currently under restoration by Mark Hull of Classic Customs at Alveley, near Kidderminster, therefore being unable to attend event this year.

             We were also joined by members of the Volvo Tuning Club, with whom we have shared a number of events in the past months including the display at Throckmoreton and VT200 at the heritage Motor Museum at Gaydon.

              Attending Members received free entry into the Worcestershire County Museum which is also housed in the castle and also free refreshments in the Museum Tea Room, thanks to Rachel and her staff of the Museum for organising this for the Club.

               Rob had also organised for us to be able to use the ‘Carriage Circle’ and lawn in front of the Castle to display our cars, which prior to the purchase of the Castle by the Trust was not allowed as it was the Home of the Bishop of Worcester.

              During the afternoon Club Members had the opportunity to have a tour of the Castle including areas not normally shown to visitors. The tour included the famous ‘Hurd Library’ the Chapel and the ‘Prince’s Bedroom’ see www.hartleburycastletrust.org

              Members of the Kidderminster Video Makers during the day filmed the event as part of a project to produce a publicity video for the castle, however they decided during the day to produce a DVD of our Event for Club Members.               A cheque for £200 was presented by Coin Hughes of the VEC and £100 by Nosh (Jon Robbie) of volvotuning.net to Rob Greenwood of the Hartlebury Castle Preservation Trust in grateful thanks of letting use the castle and grounds for this year’s gathering. Proceeds from the Club Raffle of the day will be donated to the Club’s Charity - Unicef

The 34th Bristol Classic Car Show 20th and 21st April 2013

This was without doubt the best Bristol Classic Car Show so far and our Club Stand featured 2 Jensen built P1800’s – a very rare sight considering there under 20 on the road in Britain today and also Colin Hughes’s‘all singing and dancing’ 760 turbo Lowliner Estate.
               
Michele Saunder’s 1962 P1800. A very interesting example of the model, which was originally purchased in the UK but spent the first 19 years of its life in Malaysia owned by a doctor. He returned it to the UK in 1982 and spent further 9 years on the road before being laid up for a further 11 years.  The Car made its first appearance at the Bristol Show on our stand in 2011 following a complete restoration.
Purchased by the present owner in 2012, the car has had some further restoration, which includes an unleaded Cylinder Head Conversion by Cornwall Engine Services and other work by Brian                Gue of Amazonia.
              
Joining the P1800’s was Colin’s Volvo 760 Turbo  Lowrider Estate, which caused a lot of interest, particularly with the younger visitors when standing on only 3 wheels or dancing to the on board music! The Lowrider  project was started in 2003 by Russ Venril (Birmingham) and continued by Ray Mercer (Bury) in 2008. The hydraulic system is by Pro-Hopper and cost £2500 when purchased in 2003.
It can lift the body 8 inches at the front and 10 inches at the rear. Each axle and each wheel can be independently operated, which enables the car to stand and be driven on 3 wheels. The system operates through two 36 volt pumps, powered by six 12 volt 110 amp heavy duty batteries in the rear, the batteries were replaced in 2010 for £437.10 (trade price) and should last for 3 years if treated with respect and charged and handled correctly. Paintwork is metal flake PF 005 Orion Cerise and AF 0111 Holo Silver and was undertaken by Dragon Art in Birmingham
The 800 watt sound system is loud and can be linked to the interior and under floor lighting system. The 14” chrome spoke wheels were hand built at a cost of £1600 and need regular and through cleaning. Mechanically it is the tried and tested 4 cylinder Volvo B230 ET engine with a few modifications, coupled to a 4 speed AW71 automatic gearbox. Engine produces 182 bhp The modifications have added some 250 kg to it and it now weighs 1710 kg (3770 lbs), about 1.65 tons in old money Current mileage is 166,000 and we have full history and documentation from new.
The car is used on the road and currently and does not have a garage due to other projects .Planned enhancement is upgrade the charging process to maintain and recharge the lifting system using the existing alternator, although we do not know how practical this concept is, any ideas are welcomed.
As promised at last year’s Classic and the Restoration show, Kevin returned with his ‘original’ Roger Moore TV Saint Car aka ST 1, now complete following an epic 6 year restoration and it was awarded ‘Highly Commended. This for those who have not yet seen the car is the actual car used by Roger Moore in the very first episode of The Saint – The Talented Husband.

I am offering my 1973 Volvo P1800ES for sale. I have had this car quite a few years. Meanwhile, I have acquired a lot of other cars, so I am not giving this the full attention it deserves. I would like to sell it to an enthusiast who will look after and appreciate it.

CLASSIC TOUR OF MID WALES 2015

          Just a story about how successful our holiday was in the Carmarthenshire countryside—Our hosts were the Hadley family –from Llanerchindda Farm and their effort and care taken in organising our car holiday was exceptional. Route maps for both days set in Tulip style, so easy to follow, with all the extra information re tea/coffee/toilet stops, and lunch stops if required. We travelled through beautiful scenery with breath-taking views-- taking in the reservoirs, ranges, valleys and coast and even had time to divert if we wanted to visit something special on route. In total we covered some 200 miles and we have only seen a fraction of what is on offer.

We say “lunch stops if required” as the food was exceptional, a different menu each evening all locally sourced and breakfasts fit for anyone, even the greediest eater would be satisfied. Accommodation to suite all needs and they are Dog friendly much to Willows delight. As can be seen from Russ’s photo we even had rally plates provided even though only two cars were there and we have been added to their rally wall along with clubs who came with up to 22 members.

The R W Thomson Memorial Rally Aberdeen 30th June 2013

VOLVO ENTHUSIAST CLUB MEETING ABERDEEN

Gordon Woodham our newly elected Northern Scottish Representative had organised an entry to the rally He worked hard in giving directions/information and places to stay. So thanks for that. Not knowing anything about the show other than his say so -- three of us set off to join him-- Me in my 1970 –145-- Graeme and Leslie Muir in their 1967 Amazon 131 and Dave and Heather Wilson in their 1969 -140
The show itself was well supported from the Harry Potter Anglia through most makes of British cars –and Motor cycles --American cars and a military vehicle We also had the usual Agricultural representation and stationery engines—So as you can a imagine very in keeping with the local interest of the area
The oldest vehicle was a 1913 Model T ---Our pitch was marked out and we joined Gordon in his 1990 240 GLT So our Volvo Enthusiast Club was represented with four vehicles through the ages The whole site was beautifully situated in the middle of Stonehaven with the usual stalls and burger bar—and the rain held off!!!!
Also what was interesting we gave out three membership forms to prospective folk Iain Mitchell who had a P1800 and a Volvo engine Marcus Another David Jones who had a P1800 and spares for sale This was on show and the third was to the chairman of the day Robert Duncan also has a Volvo—Now Robert has invited us back for next year and has given me permission to use some of the wording from the events program and this makes interesting reading as follows—
“What is the R.W.Thomson Fellowship and why a Rally?
Well simple answer is --that R.W.Thomson invented, among other things, pneumatic tyres, and the vast majority of cars use them. Being a local lad it seems appropriate to hold a car rally in his name. Contrary to what was popular belief Dunlop was not the inventor of pneumatic tyre. He produced a tyre for bicycles in 1888 and applied for a patent, however two years after his application --it was confirmed by the Patent Office that Thomson was the originator of the pneumatic tyre, which he produced and patented on December 10th 1845
Robert William Thomson was a prolific inventor --inventing and patenting a number of other useful items. Some dozen or so can be seen under Thomson British patents list He was also the originator of the washing machine—His important contributions to modern transport including the Road Steamer and solid rubber tyres should be more widely acknowledged. Thomson should no longer be “the forgotten genius”

RARE1800S estate prototype for sale!

Volvo 1800S Estate ‘Prototype’ 1967 – PJW 789F – A Unique Volvo!

 This Volvo 1800S Estate is believed to be a pre production ‘Prototype’ built in 1967 some 4 years before Volvo produced the 1800ES – the ‘estate’ model of the famous 1800 sports.

           Vehicle was recovered earlier this year from a field to Wiltshire where it had been stored for a number of years. No history of this vehicle has been found as to the manufacturer but it has been suggested by some, due to its construction that it may have been converted as a prototype by ‘Abotts of Farnham’ Surrey Coach Builders who converted Ford Zephyr and Zodiac Saloons into estates in the 1960’s. I have never come across another example like this in all my years around the 1800.

           Externally the conversion was excellent but inside it is a mix of all sorts, which leads me to the conclusion that the bodywork was undertaken professionally as a design exercise and on completion was sold off. The interior of the project being fitted/sourced by a subsequent owner of the vehicle. The 1800S Estate in ‘as found’ was recently the centre-piece of the Volvo Enthusiasts Club Stand at the Practical Classics restoration Show held at the NEC Birmingham and was, through social media and PC’s Website used to advertise the event. This caused much interest on the Club Stand with visitors already aware of the vehicle, wanting to see this rare car in the flesh. It was hoped with all the media interest in the car, that further information on the cars manufacturer would come to light but so far we still have no idea who converted the car and for what purpose

For sale 1967 Volvo 1800S Estate – Believed a Protototype:

 Due to other restoration commitments I have reluctantly decided to let the car go to someone who will restore it to its former glory and preserve a piece of Volvo history. The car therefore is now ‘For Sale’

Further info: The engine is totally stripped into parts, without a block, which I am told was damaged beyond use and gearbox/overdrive has also been dismantled for restoration. Some parts that were previously removed and already been restored and come with the car. 1800S Prototype at the Practical Classic Restoration Show 2015

Bristol Classic Car Show 13th-14th June 2015

Having won ‘Best Club Stand’ at last year’s Bristol Classic Car Show with our display ‘Alice in Volvoland’, the club this year was elevated to the featured ‘Club of the Show’ and moved from our usual position to a larger space in the main Showering Hall to present the best of our club cars display.

             Being let down by a number of members who had promised to bring cars and help man our display, only later to have pulled out, organisation of this year’s stand had been a real nightmare and something I would not want to happen again.

             To fill the space, I ended up, having to once again take my ‘original’ TV Saint Car ST 1, which was not planned, to Shepton Mallet. I had decided last year to retire it from both future Bristol and NEC events, where it has had extensive exposure, unless requested by the organisers, and concentrate on displaying it at local and other national shows, where it had not yet been on a Club display.

             My vehicle input for this show had always been to take just the Volvo 850 BTCC Race Estate, used in the 1994 British Touring Car Championship, when Volvo returned to motorsport with these iconic estates! This would have to be, because it has no engine (removed by TWR at the end of the race season), delivered to the event by Recovery Truck and this would mean I was free to deliver carpet tiles, tower, desk and other items required for our stand as usual, in my Transit van.

              Chris Tye brought along his lovely metallic grey 1962 Jensen built P1800, a regular at Bristol Shows, as the red 1963, very early Volvo built P1800S he has been restoring, was not finished in time for the show, a real shame as it is going to be a real stunner!

              Joining Chris and my cars were Edward Bostock with his unique, ultra low mileage, time warp 360GLE and friend Lee Duggan who came along to help. This was to be their first experience of displaying a car at a major event and building/manning the club stand. I hope you enjoyed the weekend and thanks.

              The final display vehicles were Robert Hughes’s very original everyday driver, 245 and Colin Hughes’s 240 Pick-up, winner of ‘Best Volvo Commercial’, the previous week at the Club’s Founder’s Day, which was a late substitute, due to problems with his 480ES and 760 Lowrider which had been booked to come. Colin also brought along his Volvo designed recycled plastic bikes by Itera, which always cause great interest and also his recent acquisition the ‘Volvo’ trike.

            Also on duty were stalwarts, ‘Eric’ who is often confused with Urn but has no connection and his companions ‘Carrie’ the water carrier and ‘Water’ sometimes known as H2O, who had the responsibility for looking after refreshments and hospitality on the stand. They are all now having a well earned cooling off period and rest until our next show

            There was a lot of interest in all the club exhibits, with the ‘Club Display Team’ being kept busy. A number of new members were enrolled, which is always a bonus and also it was good to see a number of visiting Volvo’s in the Show Classic Carpark, including a genuine Ruddspeed 120 which had been recently acquired by its owner and in need of lots of TLC, which he intends to do over the coming months, bringing the car back to original condition. We look forward to seeing more of the car in the future.

          A busy weekend that was soon over, our thanks to Morton’s new owners of the show for putting on the event, their support and also for Hog Roast etc plus entertainment put on for Exhibitors on the Saturday evening, which was much appreciated by all. Our next visit to Shepton Mallet will be for the Bristol Restoration Show in November, so why not come along and see us there.

Our Club display at this year’s Bristol Restoration Show held at the Bath & West Showground on the 5th-6th November, 2015 was a little different and with the support of the new Organisers – Morton’s, we had one of the largest stands in the show.
             The Club display at the request of the organisers following a conversation between them and Kevin, our Club Founder last June, featured 2 unique vehicles, a 1966 Volvo 1800S Estate owned by Kevin, which is believed to be a prototype built by ‘Abbots of Farnham’ the coachbuilder who converted Ford Zephyr’s and Consul’s into estates, which requires total restoration and is currently for sale, and mounted for display on a trailer owned by Club Member Sean Skeet.
               Towing the trailer on the Club Display, was the second unique vehicle a 2001 Mitsubishi Pinnin built for ‘Harrods of Knightsbridge’ the famous London Department Store for their Christmas 2001 Competition and Window display. It features unique ‘Harrods’ Gold leaf paintwork, additional exterior ‘Harrods’  badges and the interior retrimmed in ‘Harrods’ green leather with gold ‘Harrods’ logo embroidered on the seat backs and gold stitching. This vehicle is owned by one of our youngest members, Courtney Skeet who is only 16 and has over the past year been restoring the car with help from her granddad, member Jim Skeet and others as her first car when she is able to drive next year. There was a lot of interest in the car and Courtney was kept busy talking about her restoration and plans for the future.
             The 1800S and the Pinnin therefore formed two of the  portions of our themed stand, the restored vehicle, the ‘Barn Find’ and the final car to make up the display was a lovely 1800S owned by Terry and Lisa Court whose car was the example of ‘work in progress at the show’. Terry and Lisa had produced a great backdrop to their section of the display to show off their Saint Car 1800S with ‘stickman’ on the bonnet, as an ‘Elstree Studios Garage’ film set from TV’s The Saint, complete with camera’s, lighting, clapperboard and of course ‘Sir Roger’. Terry over the weekend worked on the car doing a rear brake overhaul, which caused lots of interest and discussion.
           Kevin's 1800S Estate caused lots of interest and was awarded 'R/U Most Interesting Vehicle' of the show.
           Many thanks again to Sean, Courtney and Jim Skeet,  for help with Transport and behind the scenes work before and after the show plus their and Member Chris Tye, Terry, Lisa and Kevin for bringing their cars, building and manning the stand and all those who came along to support the club at the event.

New Year informal Get-together on Sunday 13th January, 2013
 at the Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Oxhill,  Nr Stratford upon Avon’

For those who were fed of the Tinsel & Turkey and hum drum of the New Year the Club organised an informal get–together for  VEC Members and other Volvo owners at the Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Oxhill near  Stratford Upon Avon.

This was not our first visit to the Horse Sanctuary, having some years ago visited at the same time of year – In fact the Club has adopted one of the Horses – ‘Dylan’, a Welsh Cob, for some years.

Although only a small group braved the journey due to the threat of snow, it was in fact a very nice day but very cold. Armed with a supply of coffee, the air in the cafe was soon full of petrol fumes as discussions on restorations, purchases, technical problems etc filled the air.
Nice to see some new faces, which included Dan who has a replica BTCC 850 Touring car Estate complete with all the stickers and even Rydell’s autograph on the bonnet, which he uses very successfully to raise money for charity.

A great few hours were spent by all, including a walk around the paddocks and a visit to see Dylon, our adopted horse, who was on this occasion not outside but in the warm of his loosebox, whereas the real ‘Stig’ another resident, who we had met previously was outside in the bitter cold – could JC and the Gerbil have something to do with that!

Thanks to those who braved the cold - See you all at the next meet.

ADIEU DEAR BARBARA

On Saturday 15 December 2012, Barbara Morris left this Life and all her many friends, who will remember her always as a warm and friendly Lady. 
Her knowledge and passion for Classic cars, her grey Volvo 1800S in particular, was legendry.  A keen Concours competitor in the 1980’s and 90’s, she helped to raise the profile of Volvo’s sporting coupe to a new level, bringing her enthusiasm and energy to every event she attended.
Barbara was also to be seen at events in her (originally green) red over gold 1800ES; a concept that raised many eyebrows and divided opinion.  Coming from a lady who was a stickler for originality, this was something of a dichotomy!
Her involvement with The Sporting Bears often saw her in her mustard 1800E, with members of the paying public on board, driving a route around the NEC in Birmingham raising money for children.
With her Sister Sylvia as her navigator, Barbara took up Classic Rallying in “Rodney the Rally Car” (her red 1967 1800S) and went on many adventures in Europe and the UK.  She had recently finished the restoration of her (original) Singer Le Mans.
Barbara, we will all miss you, yours cars and your friendship.  You will long be remembered with much love and gratitude for your inclusion in our lives and the fun you brought to every occasion.

Welcome to the latest issue of our club newsletter.

Sorry it is late this time hope to do better with the next one.

The response to the last Newsletter has been really good but please could anyone with Internet Access please sign up for your copy to be sent by email. It saves money for the club.  The Quarterly magazine has been replaced by our bi-monthly newsletter that is sent to Club members via email (in colour) and by hard copy (in black & white) to those who do not have email access.
Using email costs us nothing (as our Committee all work for free), printing, packaging and posting a copy to a Member costs us around £2.50 per issue (and again, the physical part of this process is provided free)
We do have plans to create and publish a VEC annual, but this is only in the discussion process as the costs of producing this will be very expensive unless we can find a sponsor, editor and printer within the Club who could produce it at "cost" only.
Unlike other Car clubs, we are not sponsored by Volvo and most of our income is generated from our Members subscriptions,

Welcome to all new members and also this latest edition of the Club Newsletter.
I have been asked to resume my ‘Founders Ramblings’ which was a regular feature of past Newsletters/Magazines – so here goes:-
Firstly I would like to thank all those Members and friends who have sent their good wishes and support during my continued spells of ill health, it has been much appreciated. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my thanks on behalf of myself and members, to all those who have been working behind the scenes to help keep this club alive and kicking.
As far as my Classic Volvo’s are concerned, Members who came along to our Stand at the Bristol Classic Car Show will be aware that work on the ‘Original’ Roger Moore TV Saint Car 71 DXC aka ST 1 is progressing well and thanks to Club Member Jonathan Bell and others should be finished for unveiling on our Club Stand on the opening day of the Classic Motor Show at the NEC Birmingham on the 16th-18th November, 2012. What would make this a very special event if anyone has contact with Roger Moore, fore this is his first Volvo 1800 in the Series and it was him who suggested the car, when Jaguar refused to supply an E Type. Even today Sir Roger confirms that ‘my little P1800 was my favourite car and I still drive a Volvo to this day’. So if there are any members who have contact with Sir Roger, your help would be appreciated as this is 50 years of The Saint on TV and 71 DXC aka ST 1 is also 50 – what a great reunion it could be. Also on the Club Stand once again will be a collection of Members Volvo’s so why not come along and see us there, you will be made very welcome and if you have never been to the show it is one of the biggest in the Europe – Discount Tickets are available to Members see the show advert on our Club Website.
For those unable to get to the NEC, it is hoped that the final parts of the Restoration of 71 DXC aka ST 1 will take place at the Bristol Restoration Show at Shepton Mallet, on the previous Weekend  - 10th & 11th November 2012. Again we will be pleased to see all members – so come along and have a chat.
Well that’s about it from me for this issue. I shall hopefully be at Beaulieu International Autojumble again this year so please do come along and see us and I also hope to get along to the Clubs Northern gathering on Saturday 13th October at Beamish Living Museum

Where did it all start?

Ploughing up and down the A12 on a mission to rescue a batch of classic cars, it set me wondering just what gets us enthusiasts going in the first place.  And does it really matter what your particular passion is?

I have to admit to having a love of Volvos and can trace this back to my childhood; walking to the local shops with my Father I espied a very pretty dark green car and asked what make it was “That’s a Volvo” said my Dad “Its the Swedish Jaguar”.  I was hooked. 

Fast forward to 1971 and my Fiancé and I had bought a house in dire need of renovation and you couldn’t fit many bags of cement in a Mini, so we went looking for a suitable workhorse.  Enter our first Volvo, a 1962 122S and the rest was not history, because we traded that in for a new Mini just after we got married.  However, we soon realised our mistake and began the hunt for another Volvo.  This resulted in our real passion – the Volvo 1800S.  We have 8 - 1800’s of various ages and condition.  We have a total of 26 Volvos and many more have passed through our hands.

loved it for several years, but the novelty wore off.  Back to an MGBGT, which was lovely but then rust got it. 
We do still have a MG Midget, never driven it in the 11 years it’s been here!  But it has a new shell standing right next to it - and somehow the Volvos always get in the way.  I suppose it’s much easier to tackle the cars you are so intimate with and ignore the job that needs more concentration!

I think we have accepted that Swedish Iron is in our life to stay ... and we HAVE had great fun over the years; as well as driving around Europe to various Club’s meetings; making friends with so many people who share our passion; AND attending the Volvo P1800 50th Anniversary event in Blois, France in 2010 – now that WAS special.

Thanks for the Email.
Regarding your question Volvo 46 is a very old Paint Code and has been used since 1958 with just some of the following names - Red, Amazon Red, Cherry, Camine Red act. It also comes in a large variety of shades from a really dark red to a bright red. Red is also a bad colour for fading due to sunlight. This therefore can be a real problem if trying to match existing paintwork for a repair.
Most Paint Suppliers will mix paint to what they call the Standard Shade - usually the mid range point although some paints companies do list alternative shades e.g. Volvo 42 California White can be supplied by Valentine Paints in four shades - No:1 Standard Shade - No:2 Dirty Yellow/White Shade - No: 3 Clean Shade - No:4 Dirty Green Shade.
An alternative if you take a piece of paintwork from your car to a professional paint supplier they can use a Colour Spectrometer which can look at a sample paint and produce a list of tints needed to make a match.

In your question you ask for a supplier -
It really depends on what type paint you require and how it is to be applied e.g. Touch-up Can, Using Spray Gun - Cellulose, Two-pack, Water based, Base Coat & Clear etc. Most commercial paint suppliers no longer sell or stock Cellulose Paint and Two Pack (requires sprayer to wear special breathing equipment to spray as very harmful) due to restrictions in the use of solvents.

Spray Cans - from EBay e.g. Turbo Spares Tel; 01905 29342 -
Cellulose,Two-Pack and other paint/consumables to classic enthusiasts - Well known suppliers in Classic circles Ken & Lyn Tel: 01298 814813

The Original TV Saint Car ‘ST 1’ 1962 Volvo P1800
(Jensen West Bromwich, England Built)

Since ‘The Saint’ P1800 71 DXC was displayed on our Stand at the Classic Motor Show, held at the NEC Birmingham last November, much work has been undertaken on the car which includes the fitting of the Brakes, Brake & Fuel Pipes, Engine and Gearbox and Petrol Tank.

Colin Hughes’s 740 Pickup, which had been made by converting a 740 Estate by its previous owner to transport his Classic motor bikes formed part of the display by carrying many of the items still to be fitted to the Saint Car.

Also manning the Stand were club Members Jonathon Bell, Simon Biddlecomb and Robert Hughes, who were along with Kevin and Colin kept busy throughout the weekend by visitors and fellow Members keen to view and ask questions about the cars on display, Club Membership and other technical queries.

Thanks to all those who helped and visited over the weekend – See you all at the Restoration Show at the same venue on 1st & 2nd November, 2012, where it is hoped the final restoration of 71 DXC will be undertaken.

Parts Required: In order to complete the restoration of the Saint Car – Kevin is trying to locate an original set of good condition rubber front floor mats – The P1800 (1961-63) only had carpet over the tunnel and in rear, the front floors had rubber mats which were press-studded up along the tunnel and  inner sills. VEC Spring Get-together: Milestones Museum Basingstoke, May 20th 2012

This was our first southern spring get-together for a while, and a return to Basingstoke after a gap of 6 years. Eight members attended, with a total of 6 cars. P 1800’s were represented by Tony and Gillian Whitton and David Foxley. Toni’s car has never been painted; welded or even had any major components removed from it since the day it left the factory. So long as it keeps passing the MOT, Tony intends to keep it this way. Peter Titley bought along his pristine Amazon, with a 240, 740 and 850 shown by Robert Hughes, Colin Hughes and Dave Stadden. John Bailey was unable to bring along his 140, which was “under the weather”, but bought his family along to enjoy the delights of the Milestones museum. The venue was also hosting a centenary celebration for AEC, which was represented by around 30 heavy trucks and buses, including the ubiquitous Routemaster and a solid tyred Thorneycroft still in show condition. Thorneycroft was taken over by AEC, but their vehicles had been manufactured in Basingstoke since the early 20th century in a factory across the road from the Milestones museum (now sadly another retail park).
The pessimistic weather forecasts for rain turned out to be false, but a chilly breeze kept us from sitting around talking for too long. Still, with plenty to see both inside and outside the museum an enjoyable day was had by all.

Some members may have noted a clash with the Volvo Owners Club Spring Gathering at the Atwell Wilson Museum. We did not become aware of this until it was too late to do anything about it, but have now made arrangements with VOC to liaise over the dates of future events.

The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe (HP13 6QT) 450th anniversary.
 A fete and vintage/classic/interesting car show is being organized and my role is to contact the various clubs in the UK and invite as many cars as we can get. We are expecting well over a 100 cars and there will be trophies, probably 1st, 2nd and 3rd, for the following classes:

WANTED

Good dashboard top or bottom (dash top from early ES
suitable as smooth grain), early type steering wheel, early jack,
steering column for 1800S. Also interior window winders for 69 S. I would purchase a cheap car for spares as well.
Also wanted Jensen type hub cap wanted, condition not too important.
Also looking for VEC magazines.

FUEL ADDITIVES

As you may have read has now been delayed until 2013 now I for one am pleased as I said I would write a piece for this newsletter and I did not realise how much information there is, as we have no experience never having used it.
I would be grateful to anyone having used these products or something else, please can you send me details of your experience so other members can benefit. The following is from the FBHVC:

The permitted Ethanol content in petrol is to rise from 5% to 10% in 2013.
Ethanol causes damage to engines that were not designed to withstand it... Those most likely to be affected are vehicles ten years old or older, carburettor vehicles and first generation direct spark ignition vehicles should not be fuelled on E10 (10% Ethanol) unless the manufacturer can state the vehicles are compatible.
The problems are numerous and include Corrosion when 2 dissimilar metals are in contact with an electrolyte like Ethanol. Rubber components like hoses, seals, gaskets etc which may become hardened, distorted or dissolved by Ethanol.
Ethanol holds water and can expose fuel system components as steel gas tanks to rust.

SCRAP WARNING FOR CLASSIC CARS
I have been reading about this in the newspapers it seems that as the price paid for scrap metal has gone sky high in all area’s of the country that thieves are stealing classic cars to scrap and sell the metal. Not knowing (I don’t believe this myself) that they are old, loved and in some cases worth thousands. So beware check your security.
